La Loba - Bone Woman.

In short, this folk tale, (variations of which are found world-wide), tells the story of La Loba - The Bone Woman, who lives in a cave. She roams the desert collecting bones, traditionally wolf bones and of creatures that are in danger of being lost to the world. She then carefully puts the skeleton together, chanting at the fire, bringing the animal back to life!

I have adapted this tale somewhat to link it to Africa where I live. Instead of a wolf I have portrayed the African Wild Dog. Unfortunately, due to dwindling habitat and gun toting farmers, this magnificent creature is on the brink of extinction. I sincerely hope there are enough of us 'Bone Women' out there, to ensure their survival.

(An original version of this story can be found in the book 'Women Who Run with the Wolves' by Clarissa Pinkola Estes).

This painting was done for my entry in CrystallineEssence's Fairytale Contest. [link]
